All Being Well Market Stall
FSA Food Hygiene and Nutrition grant winner 2005-06
The All Being Well market stall is a public health initiative being run in partnership between Leeds City Council’s Environmental Health Department and the Leeds Primary Care Trusts
Aims and Objectives
The aim of the initiative was to provide a fully equipped and operational kitchen and display areas on a market stall in Leeds Kirkgate Market to be used by various departments and organisations to deliver Environmental Health and Public Health information to members of the public visiting and shopping in the market, and also targeting traders and staff working in the market.
The objectives of the initiative are:
- To increase the awareness and implementation of good food safety practices amongst food handlers working in Leeds Kirkgate Market.
- To assist proprietors of food business to increase their awareness of healthy eating.
- To increase the awareness of safe food handling amongst market customers.
- To provide a readily accessible facility for various departments and organisations to promote or deliver their health message or service.
- To target the difficult to reach and ethnic minority groups that use the market

The current partners for the “All Being Well’ market stall are: Leeds City Council Environmental Health Services, Leeds Primary Care Trusts (5) and Leeds Development Services – Market Division
Methodology
The project was delivered by:
- Securing the use of a suitably located indoor market stall within Leeds Kirkgate Market.
- Designing and refurbishing the market stall with a fully equipped and operational kitchen and communal areas that can be used during sessions, events and demonstrations on the stall.
- Providing the stall free of charge to various departments and external organisations to use to deliver public health work.
- Holding demonstrations on food, identification, fitness, preparation along with healthy eating.
- Purchasing and promotinghealthy food options available in the market.
- Holding cookery demonstrations by traders in the market using healthy food ingredients.
- Providing and maintaining a supply of healthy eating and food safety promotional materials and resources on the stall.
- Providing a website for the stall that allows organisations to view a calendar showing a programme of events for the stall.
Activities / Sessions
Sessions delivered included:
- Cookery demonstrations: purchase, preparation and cooking of healthy food.
- Identification and fitness of fresh fish and exotic fruit and vegetables.
- Food safety and hygiene sessions, hand washing session and basic food hygiene in business premises and the home.
- Taster Sessions- Healthy foods purchased and prepared at the stall.
- Five a Day – Five a day message – consumption of daily recommended portions of five potions of fruit and vegetables.
- Training Sessions: Healthy eating, food safety & hygiene, pest control, Safer Food Better Business, new food hygiene legislation.
Funding
- Food Standards Agency Grant – Local Food Hygiene & Nutrition Initiative - £10000
- Further funding was secured from the five Leeds Primary Care Trusts - £15000

- Operational Kitchen – Cooking facilities cooker, hob, refrigerated storage, fully equipped kitchen with equipment and utensils.
