Food choice
Enabling people to make informed choices about food and help them choose foods that meet their individual need is one on the key aims of the Food Standards Agency’s strategic plan up to 2011.
Traffic Light Labels
The Food Standards Agency has developed a voluntary front of pack nutrition labelling approach (the traffic light label) which has been designed to provide key nutritional information at a glance and supplements the nutrition information found on the back of product packaging. Traffic light labels indicate whether a product is high (red), medium (amber) or low (green) in fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt and is intended to help shoppers easily identify healthier choices.

Scores on the Doors
Scores on the doors is an effective tool in empowering consumers to make informed choices about where they choose to eat. Scores displayed at the establishment showing business hygiene scores will allow consumer to make a choice based on the level of compliance with food law . Research undertaken by the Agency shows that consumers want to see the introduction of a single nationwide scheme and the Agency is working with local authorities and food businesses across the country towards such a scheme.
