Making healthy choices

Food enforcers can help local people to make informed choices when purchasing food, and so reduce the risk of them developing diet-related diseases in the future.

Food standards requirements relate to labelling of food, protection from contaminants and misleading consumers.  Through education of businesses, to ensure they provide information, and of consumers to help them understand that information, councils can help people make informed choices about the food they buy and eat.

Enforcers can also have a role as educators in raising awareness of the nutritional content of different food products more genarally as part of a healthy diet. They can also help caterers and retailers to provide healthier options, for example through, advice at inspections, providing training , or running award schemes.

Our case studies reflect a growing number of authorites who are working, in partnership with others especially PCTs, to make local communities healthier by enabling them to make healthy choices.
